Karlene McConnell creates abstractions of the landscape, recalling the warmth and color found in the red clay and green marshes of her childhood in the south. At other times, the crisp, cool ocean breezes of Maine and the brisk grays and blues of the Berkshire hills have manifested themselves in her work. Each painting is composed of color, line and positive and negative areas. Many layers of paint are applied to create atmosphere and a sense of place. Trees and horizon lines may surface or retreat in fields of color. These pieces are organic and rythmic portrayals of the constancy of nature.
McConnell is a former art educator and museum curator. Her work has been exhibited for 18 years in galleries and museums and can be found in corporate and private collections in the US, Canada and Germany.
